Why Do We Automatically Smile When Someone Smiles at Us?

Two people smiling at each other.

Smiling is contagious! When we see someone else smile, our brain activates mirror neurons, causing us to reflexively return the gesture.

This is a natural survival mechanism—smiling back builds trust and strengthens social bonds. Even forcing yourself to smile can trick your brain into feeling happier, thanks to the release of dopamine and serotonin.
