Why Do We Yawn When We See Someone Else Yawn?

Yawning is mysteriously contagious, but scientists believe it’s linked to empathy and social bonding.

When you see someone yawn, your brain mirrors their behavior, a response controlled by the same part of the brain that processes emotions.

Studies show that people are more likely to “catch” a yawn from family or close friends than from strangers. Even some animals, like dogs and chimpanzees, yawn when they see humans do it.
